  • Areas of activity include specialist hospitals for orthopedics, traumatology, internal medicine, rheumatology, neurology, geriatrics, pediatrics, child and adolescent psychiatry, psychiatry and psychosomatics.
  • In addition, facilities for people with disabilities, special needs schools, kindergartens, homes, day clinics and retirement/nursing homes.
  • Occupational therapists work in social, medical and vocational rehabilitation facilities as well as in workshops for people with disabilities.
  • Other fields of work include licensed occupational therapy practices and teaching at schools for occupational therapy.

Expectations

  • At least one week of work experience in an occupational therapy setting
  • Secondary school leaving certificate and a completed vocational training of at least two years or intermediate secondary school leaving certificate
  • A specific grade point average is not required.

Job Description

In this role, you help people of all ages with temporary or permanent physical or mental limitations to live as independently as possible. You create treatment plans, guide your patients through exercises, and provide support as needed. Your work environment could be a clinic or a specialized practice, but home visits are also possible. Many of your patients face difficult circumstances, and some suffer from pain. Thanks to your creativity, patience, and empathy, you ensure that everyone entrusted to your care leaves their therapy session feeling empowered and with a smile on their face.

The vocational training programs offered include assistant and specialist positions in child and youth services, integration assistance, and healthcare – all meaningful, rewarding, and highly promising career paths. Various training options are available, differing in both duration and content. The schools are certified to accept applicants supported by the employment agency or job center. There is a program for every educational qualification. Those with a lower secondary school leaving certificate can begin with an assistant training program. Training to become a recognized specialist generally requires a higher secondary school leaving certificate or an assistant qualification. For the work-study program at cooperating universities in nursing and occupational therapy, a university entrance qualification is required.
