Job Description
The range of tasks for a road maintenance worker is very broad and varied. Their responsibilities focus on ensuring the navigability of roads, maintaining traffic safety, and the cost-effective upkeep of the road network. A significant component is snow removal and gritting in winter, as well as the maintenance of green spaces in summer. They also implement traffic regulations by setting up traffic signs, designate detours during road construction, and secure accident sites on roads.
The driver's license (B, C, CE) is paid for during the apprenticeship. Since the apprenticeship is with a public employer, the salary is good and the job is secure. Apprentices then work on the roads in their region at road and highway maintenance depots or road construction offices. There are 190 highway maintenance depots available, allowing for a free choice of workplace. The work is performed in shifts because the weather rarely respects the time of day.
The apprenticeship lasts three years. In addition to the specialist training at the road maintenance depots, theoretical knowledge is taught at the vocational school in Würzburg. Practical courses at the inter-company training center in Gerolzhofen (Schweinfurt district) supplement the training.
