Job Description
Biology laboratory technicians at the university typically conduct experiments under the guidance or direction of a scientist, sometimes as part of an international team. Depending on the research question, these experiments can be performed on (living) organisms such as microorganisms, cell cultures, plants, and animals. The biology laboratory technicians plan and carry out the experiments, document the results, and analyze them. This involves the use of laboratory-specific equipment and its associated software. They perform not only simple routine tasks but also activities involving complex procedures and sophisticated analytical techniques with meticulous care and precision. In addition to teaching essential chemical fundamentals and the safe handling of chemicals, the following areas are among the main focuses of the training: genetics/molecular biology (e.g., working with DNA and RNA and their genetic modification), biochemistry (e.g., protein analysis), cell culture (e.g., cultivation and investigation of metabolic processes), zoology/laboratory animal science (e.g., husbandry and experiments with mice, including organ dissection), microbiology (e.g., cultivation and differentiation of bacteria on various culture media), and botany (e.g., preparing tissue sections and testing for resistance). Areas of immunology, medicine, and pharmacology are also part of the curriculum.
